#99 cm€261,95B Love Flumies are friction mallets handcrafted by Bear Love and his team in the mountains of West Wales, UK. Rather than striking the gong, you gently draw the silicone head across its surface, bringing out sustained singing tones, whale-like glides, and layers of overtones. Small changes in speed, pressure, and playing position can produce remarkably different sounds.
Flumies come in a range of sizes, each suited to bringing out different tones from your gong. The number indicates the head diameter in centimetres: a #4 has a 4 cm head. As a general rule, smaller heads bring out higher, brighter tones, while larger heads favor lower frequencies and deeper drones. The gong itself also plays a part in how each size responds.
Choosing a Flumie
- Essential High (#2, #2.5, #3): Designed for the upper range of the gong, producing bright, high-pitched singing tones and shimmering overtones. Lightweight carbon fibre handles allow for precise control and delicate movements.
- Essential Mid (#4, #5, #6, #6.5): The most versatile range, bringing out everything from mid-range singing tones to lower, fuller sounds. Hardwood handles provide stability and control, making these a good starting point for exploring friction playing.
- Essential Low (#7, #7.5, #8, #9): Made for deep, resonant tones, low rumbles, and sustained drones. Best suited to medium and larger gongs, these heavier Flumies have hardwood handles and generally respond best to slow, controlled movements using two hands.

Construction
Each Flumie is made with B Love's own silicone compound, designed for durability and easy cleaning with a damp cloth. The wooden-handled models are individually numbered and finished with a hand-soldered B Love maker's mark.
Playing
Place the head against the gong and draw it slowly and gently across the surface. Experiment with speed, pressure, and position to find different singing tones and overtones. The larger Low models can be played with one hand, but using two hands generally gives better control.
